Why choose wood flooring?

Wood flooring surfaces complement your decor and furnishings to create a distinctive transformation of your floors. Wood floors are an investment and they look good and can last for generations to come and can add value to your building or property. Wooden floors radiate style and comfort depending on the type of timber and colour and can change the character of your living space from rustic to classic or traditional. Wood is a healthy choice that requires cleaning now and then with the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning products. Wood is one of the few truly renewable materials we have. The UK has more forests now than it did 100 years ago.

Wood block pavement

Wood block, parquet and logs

Wood block pavement may have originated in Russia in the 14th-century, but it gained prominence in the 1820s and 1830s as a road building alternative to the irregularly surfaced cobblestone streets common during that era. Wood block was also favoured because stone was scarce and wood was abundant. Additionally, horse traffic reportedly made less noise on wood-surfaced streets. However, the drawbacks of Nicolson pavement include slippery surfaces when wet or icy. Parquet is a geometric mosaic of wood pieces used for decorative effect the word derives from old French "parchet" meaning a small enclosed space. Crown cut and Quarter sawn are the two ways wood strip, planks and blocks are cut from tree logs. Quarter sawn timber is more dent resistant as it is cut diagonally plus 50% more stable.

Hand scraped wood flooring

Hand scraped wood flooring

The distinctive look of a hand scraped floor is no longer a vision from past. The character texture richness, the old wood floor created by time and nature is still available today.
Hand scraped character wooden floors were one of the first wood floors in colonial times (1607-1708) only for the wealthiest homes. The craftsmen would lay down rough hand sawn timbers and use hand tools to scrape them smooth (these hand tools are still available today) before bringing in handfuls of sand that they would rub on to the floors until they were as smooth as possible. The wood was left unfinished and built up a great colour and patina over time.
